Vietnam retain top position at Asian Beach Games 2016

Vietnam remained in the first position at the ongoing 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG5) with 35 gold, 30 silver and 36 bronze medals after the sixth day of competition on September 30.

Da Nang (VNA) – Vietnam remained in the first position at the ongoing 5th Asian Beach Games (ABG5) with 35 gold, 30 silver and 36 bronze medals after the sixth day of competition on September 30.

Thailand ranked second in the medal tally with 27 golds, 20 silvers and 27 bronzes, followed by China with 11 golds, 16 silvers and 16 bronzes.

In Vovinam events, which are taking place from September 30 to October 3, Vietnam scored 275 points to win gold in the men’s leg attack technique final – ahead of Myanmar . Meanwhile, Vietnamese women brought home a bronze medal in the weapon self-defence category.

At the final day of petanque competition, Vietnamese athletes only bagged two bronzes after being defeated by rivals from Thailand . With this outcomes, the host team finished games with one gold, two silvers and five bronzes.

Vietnam ’s shuttlecock team make a new record at the games when they claimed the seventh gold medal in both the men’s and women’s categories. The men’s team easily defeated China with scores 21-8 and 21-13, while the women’s squad beat Thailand in two sets 21-12 and 21-13.

The Asian Beach Games is one of the continent’s biggest sport events, initiated by the Olympic Council of Asia.

The biennial event was held for the first time in 2008 in Bali, Indonesia. The following versions took place in Muscat (Oman) in 2010, Haiyang, China in 2012, and in Phuket, Thailand in 2014.

In ABG 4, Vietnam ranked 5th in the medal tally with eight gold, 12 silver and 20 bronze medals.

ABG5 will close on October 3 after 10 days of competition.-VNA
