Vietnam, RoK urged to enhance cooperation in diplomacy, security, defence

Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) need to strengthen collaboration in the spheres of diplomacy, security and defence, thus deepening their strategic cooperative partnership, said the top Vietnamese legislator.

Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam and the Republic of Korea (RoK) need tostrengthen collaboration in the spheres of diplomacy, security and defence,thus deepening their strategic cooperative partnership, said the top Vietnameselegislator.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan made the statement whilemeeting with RoK President Moon Jae-in in Seoul on December 6.

She affirmed that the Vietnamese NA wishes to continue consolidating andbuilding mutual trust between the two legislatures, suggesting the two nationsmaintain the regular exchanges and meetings between senior leaders as well asfacilitate exchanges and cooperation between agencies at all levels andlocalities, thus enhancing mutual understanding and reinforcing politicaltrust.

They need to develop a stable and long-term relationship to create a favourableenvironment for expanding their collaboration in areas stated in the “Vietnam-RoKJoint Statement towards the Future,” she said.

Vietnam proposes the RoK continue supporting the country in improving lawenforcement capacity at sea, and share experience to help it effectively buildand implement maritime strategies, she added.

The leader stressed that Vietnam always creates favourable conditions for RoKinvestors to engage in the country’s key works and encourages technologytransfer in renewable energy, while coordinating in effectively realising theVietnam-RoK Free Trade Agreement and the framework agreement between the twoGovernments on credits from the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF)for the 2016-2020 period.

For his part, President Moon affirmed that Vietnam is a strategiccooperation partner of the RoK in various areas. He said he wishes that the twowill further enhance their cooperation, especially after this visit byChairwoman Ngan.

He suggested Ngan and the Vietnamese legislature support Korean enterprises todo business in Vietnam, contributing to the economic development of the twonations.

As the countries share similarities in culture and history, Vietnam will bealways a close friend of the RoK, said the President, who spoke highly of thecontributions of the Vietnamese community to local development.

According to Moon, his country is pursuing the “New Southern Policy”, whichfocuses on enhancing ties with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations(ASEAN), with Vietnam being one of the most important partners.

As the RoK will host the ASEAN-Korea Summit in the time to come, he wishedVietnam would backing his country in strengthening relations with the bloc.-VNA
