Moscow (VNA) - A memorandum of understanding hasbeen signed to establish a Russia-Vietnam biomedical science and technologyresearch centre, a project that covers joint cooperation in proton radiationtherapy in cancer treatment.

The MoU was inked at a Vietnamese business forum held as part ofthe 14th St. Petersburg International Innovation Forum. The signingceremony was participated by Prof. Dr. Tran Dai Lam, Director of the Institute for Tropical Technology underthe Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology; Arkady Stolpner, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Berezin Sergey Medical Institute (MIBS) in St.Petersburg; and Evgeny Grigoriev, Chairman of the Committee for ExternalRelations of St. Petersburg.

The Russia-Vietnam centre will be a place for the research,diagnosis and treatment of cancers with modern technologies, including protonradiation therapy technology, creating a premise for the implementation of a trialmodel of cancer treatment hospital using the therapy in Vietnam.

Speaking at theceremony, Lam said the project opens a new prospect of cooperation with Russiaand is the first step for Vietnam to become a cancer treatment centre in SoutheastAsia.

Lam also emphasised that it will contribute to the fightagainst cancers in Vietnam with high efficiency and reasonable costs regardingthe use of the most advanced technologies.

After the signing, Stolpner announced that the MIBSwill sponsor the cost for sending three Vietnamese children to Russia for freecancer treatment at the MIBS each year./.

PM releases instructions as measles cases increase

Vietnam has recorded nearly 40,000 suspected measles cases and five measles-related deaths since the beginning of this year. The southern region reported the highest number of cases (57%), the central region accounted for 19.2%, the north 15.1%, and the Central Highlands 8.7%.
