In an interview with a Moscow-based Vietnam News Agency correspondent, Assoc.Prof Anna Kireeva from the Moscow StateInstitute of International Relations under the RussianMinistry of Foreign Affairs, stressed the need for Russia to enhance economicties with Vietnam in order to fully tap the potential of the comprehensivestrategic partnership between the two countries.
She suggested that Russia should diversify thestructure of its trade with Vietnam, particularly in sectors of big potentialsuch as power and agriculture. She added that Russia can import vegetable andaquatic products from Vietnam while exporting meat and dairy products.
It is time for the two countries to utilizeadvantages offered by the Vietnam-EAEU free trade agreement, she said.
Other sectors with great potential for bilateralpartnership are light industry, electronics, machinery manufacturing, informationand communication technology, and high technology.
The expert also underlined the importance of investment cooperation between thetwo nations, hoping that they will propose projects during the Vietnameseleader’s visit.
The two sides set up the Russia-Vietnam Investment Fund worth 500 million USD,which provides capital for bilateral trade projects between the Russian Direct Investment Fund and the VietnameseState Capital Investment Corporation.
Kireeva said Vietnam plays animportant role in Russia’s policy of a “pivot” to Asia.
According to the expert, SoutheastAsia has a strategic position and one of the key area in Russia’s policy. Shenoted that Russia is active in reinforcing relations with many countries inEast Asia, including Vietnam – the largest partner of Russia in Southeast Asia. The Vietnam-EAEU FTA is the first stepfor Russia to participate in the integration process of East Asia.
Russia pays attention to enhancingsecurity cooperation with Vietnam, and considers it a factor for stability inthe region. Through the policy, Russia wants to increase its presence in EastAsia, seeking development motivation and contributing to regional developmentand security.
Thetwo countries should also foster cooperation in international issues of commonconcern, while Russia needs to diversifytrade structure, especially in energy and agriculture – high potential fieldsof both nations, she noted.
Through President Quang’s visit,Russia and Vietnam can concretise economic and trade agreements and discussmeasures to create new growth to expand their trade ties, she said.-VNA
