Vietnam expects to receive more assistance and consultancy from the World Bank in seeking solutions to create momentum for economic growth, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung.

Receiving the WB Country Director in Vietnam, Victoria Kwakwa, in Hanoi on Sept. 14, Hung proposed the WB pay due attention to a fact that Vietnam, together with Bangladesh, is likely to suffer the heaviest effects from global climate change. Vietnam is willing to cooperate with the WB in researching and coming up with specific measures to mitigate these adverse impacts, he said.

Having thanked the WB for its useful support and help, Hung said Vietnam has successfully prevented an economic downturn, however, the country needs more time to regain impetus for the growth for its economy.

The deputy PM said that the government will implement additional light demand stimulus packages and focus on infrastructure and human resources development, as well as hunger elimination and poverty reduction.

Kwakwa spoke highly of the recent results of cooperation between Vietnam and the WB and expressed her delight at Vietnam ’s successes in curbing the economic slowdown.

Vietnam has taken appropriate steps to avoid a deeper recession and posted a positive economic growth rate that few nations can boast of, said the WB official.

She emphasised the need to implement the up-coming stimulus packages, but at the same time to ensure a balance in the country’s endeavours to achieve a high economic growth rate and cope with problems such as inflation.

Vietnam should maintain its successes in the government’s reform programme and consider carefully when choosing stimulus packages during its continued implementation, Kwakwa elaborated.

The WB official also shared Hung’s views on climate change, describing it as a top issue and pledged to cooperate with Vietnam , and provide information and consultancy in this field./.
