Tra Vinh (VNA) – The Vietnam Social Value Alliance, which aims to promote coordination among multiple agencies in addressing environmental and social issues, made its debut in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh on April 23.

The establishment of the alliance is part of a framework of global social activities run by SK Innovation, under SK Group of the Republic of Korea (RoK).

The alliance includes state agencies; universities, including Tra Vinh University, Hanoi National University, and Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology; PVEP, Tan Cang Saigon, and a number of SK Innovation subsidiaries; as well as non-governmental and non-profit organisations. A memorandum of understanding was signed by the alliance in 2018 to join hands in restoring mangrove forests and creating jobs through social enterprise activities.

Its work is hoped to increase contributions towards social values.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chung In-bo, head of the social value promotion team at SK Innovation, said that as an enterprise specialising in energy, chemistry, and oil and gas, SK Innovation looks to take on environmental responsibility.

SK Innovation has also coordinated with the provincial People’s Committee and Tra Vinh University to implement a forestation and mangrove restoration project in Tra Vinh. In 2018, SK Innovation planted 35,000 seedlings on a total area of over 11 ha along the coast in My Long Nam commune of Cau Ngang district. The firm hopes to expand the forested area to 22 ha in 2019.

Meanwhile, investment for charitable activities and social dedication activities are sourced from its “happiness sharing fund”, Chung In-bo said.

Secretary General of the UN Environment Programme in the RoK Kim Jae-bum expressed his belief that cooperation between SK Innovation, Tra Vinh province, and members of the Vietnam Social Value Alliance, will contribute to the successful implementation of the mangrove forests planting and protecting project, thus making strides in environmental protection.

On the occasion, SK Innovation also launched its first Social Enterprise Alliance in Vietnam, which aims to provide vocational training to students of Tra Vinh University. –VNA
