Vietnam, Switzerland boost ties in innovation, research cooperation

Hanoi (VNA) - As part of National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man’s working visit to Switzerland, NA Vice Chairman Nguyen Duc Hai and Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long visited the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) on July 29 to explore opportunities for enhanced cooperation in innovation, research, and high-tech development.

Welcoming the Vietnamese guests, Antoine Jourdan, a senior official at EPFL and Director of the EPFL Innovation Park, spoke highly of the growing Vietnam–Switzerland partnership and expressed hope that the visit would further strengthen bilateral collaboration.

He introduced EPFL’s educational and research focuses, ranging from engineering and computer science to natural sciences and architecture, and highlighted the role of the EPFL Innovation Park in fostering cutting-edge technological advancement.

The EPFL Innovation Park hosts over 1,000 startups and operates in close collaboration with leading academic institutions such as UNIL, IMD, HES-SO, and ECAL. It serves as a hub for knowledge exchange and technology transfer, connecting research labs with more than 300 major international corporations. With 35 on-site innovation and R&D centres, the park forms an ecosystem with individuals at the forefront of innovation.

NA Vice Chairman Hai expressed admiration for EPFL’s forward-looking vision in research and education. He noted Vietnam’s strong commitment to science and technology, citing the Politburo's recently issued Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, which positions science, technology, innovation, and digital transformation as strategic drivers of socio-economic growth and national competitiveness. He expressed a hope for deeper cooperation in developing high-tech human resources and invited Swiss partners to collaborate on AI and digital transformation initiatives in Vietnam.

Members of the Vietnamese delegation also engaged with EPFL representatives on topics such as sustainable funding mechanisms for innovation centres and support for pioneering individuals in innovation.

Later the same day, the delegation visited the headquarters of SICPA, a Swiss technology firm specialising in digital safety solutions./.
