The Vietnam-US Friendship Society organised a gathering in Hanoi on May 20, ahead of the upcoming visit of US President Barack Obama to Vietnam.

At the event, Chairman of the association Nguyen Tam Chien, who is also former ambassador to the US, recalled milestones of the two countries’ cultural and people-to-people exchanges in the past 60 years, which he considered an origin of mutual understanding.

Chien expected the two peoples to jointly take part in more activities in the fields of science, art and literature.

Vietnamese and US participants shared their stories of working with the other side and proposed measures to boost the ties further.

Currently, 19,000 Vietnamese students are pursuing education in the US. About 500,000 Americans arrive in Vietnam annually, including tourists, entrepreneurs and students.-VNA
