The 24th APhO, held from June 3-10 in Malaysia, drawing the participation of 208 contestants from 27 countries and territories. This was the first APhO ever organised in this country, with the largest ever number of participating teams.
The competition was divided into two sections: a five-hour theoretical examination and a five-hour laboratory experiment, consisting of either one or two experiments, according to the APhO 2024’s website.
This year's theoretical test was based on modern and practical applications of physics, such as fountains, fibre optics, and research results published in the renowned journal Nature on astrophysics.
The experimental part involved experiments with gyroscopes, a device used to maintain orientation and direction, often used in navigation systems. The part highlighted students’ practical applications in precise positioning for maritime aviation and self-balancing devices.
The Ministry of Education and Training praised the team’s performance, highlighting Vietnam’s continued success at the APhO.
Vietnam first participated in 2000, with its best result in 2018, winning four gold medals.
At the 2023 edition, all of the eight participating Vietnamese students also brought home honour, with four bronze medals and four certificates of merit. Meanwhile, the team won two bronzes and five certificates of merit in 2022.
