Vietnamese marksmen hope for best results at 17th Asiad

Vietnam’s national shooting team, consisting of 14 male and 10 female shooters, left for the Republic of Korea (RoK) on September 4 in preparation for the forthcoming 17th Asian Games (Asiad) in Incheon, the English version of the Nhan Dan (People) newspaper reported.

Alongwith swimming and weightlifting, shooting is also expected to bringhome high achievements at the year’s biggest continental sportingtournament.

As scheduled, Vietnamese marksmen will undergo afortnight-long training course, instructed by two shooting experts, ParkChung Gun and Choi Jung Ah, before joining the Vietnam sportscontingent to enter the Athletes Village.
The national teamcoach, Nguyen Thi Nhung said that RoK trainers were very good atpsychological training and knew how to help athletes build up theirconfidence and overcome spiritual crises during their contests.

Thenational shooting team has pledged utmost determination to change itsmedal colour at this year’s Asiad competition. Vietnamese shooting hasalways maintained its place among the leading group in Southeast Asiaover the past few years; however, its Asiad achievements have remainedmodest, Nhung said.

Ha Minh Thanh missed out on the historicalgold medal for Vietnam at the 16th Asiad in Guangzhou, China four yearsago as he just came in second in the final round of the men’s 25m rapidfire pistol event, behind Chinese Li Yuehong, leaving a lot of regretsfor both himself and coach Nguyen Thi Nhung.

Hoang Xuan Vinh,known as Vietnam’s first marksman to win an official Olympic berth(London Olympic Games in 2012), is currently the ‘big brother’ ofnational shooting team. Vinh is also the number one medal hope ofVietnamese shooting at the upcoming 17th Asiad. Along with otherprominent individuals, whose achievements have reached world andcontinent levels, Vietnamese shooting has also targeted success inseveral disciplines such as rapid fire pistol, team revolver, and men’sand women’s running target rifle.

Vietnam’s leading shooters,Hoang Xuan Vinh and Tran Quoc Cuong, will have an important warm-up forthe 17th Asiad at the 2014 ISSF World Championships in Spain fromSeptember 6-20. Xuan Vinh and Quoc Cuong will compete in the men’s 50mslow fire pistol and 10m air pistol events, which are also the twodisciplines they pledge top performances for at the Incheon games.

TheSpain competition functions as an ideal opportunity for the twoVietnamese shooting aces to gain experience, train competitive stuff andmake necessary expertise adjustments, ahead of their 17th Asiadcampaign, beginning on September 20.

Vietnam is expected to send64 athletes to compete in 20 out of the 36 events at the upcoming 17thAsiad which will be held in Incheon from September 19 to October 4.

At the 16th ASIAD in China, the nation gained one gold, 17 silvers and 15 bronzes.-VNA
