Vietnam is making every effort to further deepen its relations with French, a senior officer has said.
Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army Lieutenant General Vo Van Tuan made the statement during a reception in Hanoi on May 9 for the visiting French Senator Jean-Claude Peyromelt and Deputy Head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Armed Forces under the Senate of France Christain Cambon.
Tuan said their visit to Vietnam contributes to promoting the cooperation between the two countries, especially in defence.
He also affirmed Vietnam’s standpoint on China’s illegal oil rig operation in Vietnam’s waters, saying that this violates Vietnam’s territorial waters.
Vietnam has been using all peaceful measures to safeguard its sovereignty in the sea, Tuan stressed, adding that the country hopes to receive more support from the international community, including France.
Jeam-Claude Peyromelt underlined the great potential for cooperation between the two countries. He said the upgrade of the bilateral ties to the strategic partnership practically benefits both countries and their peoples.
He expressed consensus with Vietnam’s viewpoint of solving the issue in a peaceful manner on the basis of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).-VNA
