Hanoi (VNA) - Vietnamese Grandmaster Le Quang Liem won the ninth match at the Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival 2018 in England on January 31.

The former world blitz chess champion, Liem, defeated Andrey Esipenko of Russia after 64 moves.

With the advantage of holding the white pawn, the Ho Chi Minh City-born player controlled the game.

Earlier in the eighth match, Liem had an important win against Dvirnyy Danyyil of Italy.

With four wins and five draws, Liem has gained 6.5 points to rank 17th out of 150 participants.

Nakamura Hikaru of the United States, Vachier-Lagrave Maxime of France and Rapport Richard of Hungary are leading the event with the same point of seven.
