Hanoi (VNA) – The Asia-America Gateway (AAG) undersea cable was fully repaired on the night of January 23, restoring full Internet connectivity between Vietnam and foreign countries, two days earlier than scheduled, a representative of the Vietnam Posts and Telecommunications Group (VNPT) confirmed.

Following a reconfiguration of the AAG cable system from January 6-9, the AAG operator found a new rupture on the system’s section S1 to Vietnam, and intended to conduct a reconfiguration for the section from January 21-25. However, the work was completed in the evening of January 23.

Earlier, the Asia-Pacific Getaway (APG) was temporarily closed down on January 6 when the APG cable was moved from current position to another place due to the Singaporean Government’s plan to expand Changi International Airport.

The AAG and APG submarine cables are the two main systems connecting Vietnam with the world, therefore, the cable breaks greatly affected the country.

The AAG has a total length of 20,000 km, connecting Southeast Asia with the United States. The route’s connecting point with Vietnam is part of the S1 section, extending 314 kilometres and coming on land in Ba Ria-Vung Tau province.

The 10,400km-long APG is an undersea cable system linking eight countries and territories in the Asia-Pacific region -- Malaysia, Singapore, China and China’s Hong Kong as well as Taiwan, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Vietnam.

Statistics from the Vietnam Internet Association shows that the country currently now has over 50 million internet users.-VNA
