With its growth rate, Vietnam will see a boom in intellectual property as a result of local demand and foreign investment, said Dr Francis Gurry, General Director of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).

So, it is necessary for Vietnam’s IP-related agencies to improve their capacity, Dr Francis Gurry told Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung in Hanoi on Jan. 19.

According the WIPO chief, IP has made an important contribution to the country’s socio-economic development achievements over the past years.

He said Vietnam had a right assessment of IP’s important role and made successes in IP rights protection.

He highly valued the country’s cooperation with WIPO.

Deputy PM Hung thanked WIPO’s cooperation and assistance for Vietnam as well as Dr Francis Gurry’s appreciation, saying Vietnam has to do much in the field,

Vietnam always attaches importance to IP rights protection and considers it an important issue in national socio-economic, scientific and technological development strategies, he said.

The country, therefore, has acceded to various in international IP treaties and regional agreements on IP rights protection.

The Deputy PM expressed his wish that WIPO continues help Vietnam in IP field, particularly in making IP policy and law, enforcing related institutions, development of human resources, and improving people’s awareness of IP./.
