The Vietnam News Agency (VNA) seeks closer ties with its Asia-Pacific counterparts through exchange of experiences and development of personnel with a view to ensuring its success, a VNA official said on April 22.

VNA Deputy General Director Nguyen Hoai Duong delivered this message at the Summit Congress of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA), which is being held in Seoul , the Republic of Korea (RoK), from April 21-24 under the theme “Challenges and opportunities for news agencies.”

Chief executives of almost all the 41 OANA member news agencies as well as guests from Europe, the Middle East and Africa , are gathered at the conference to seek ways of widening multilateral cooperation in coping with the challenges posed by the unfolding digital media revolution.

Duong spoke of the VNA’s efforts to make big change to respond to the current situation, especially its launching of the four-language online newspaper VietnamPlus, with its abundant content and beautiful design, in 2008, which has emerged as one of the most popular e-newspapers in Vietnam .

In early 2010, VNA became the country’s first media agency to provide multi-language telecom services enabling mobile users to read newspapers in a choice of languages, the official said, noting that this service now has as many as 20,000 subscribers.

Duong said this year will witness another important step for the VNA as the news agency is preparing to launch its own TV channel. The channel, named Vnews, is expected to officially broadcast in the third quarter, making it the first-ever TV channel in Vietnam providing news round-the-clock, he added.

According to the deputy general director, the VNA has advantages thanks to its network of 63 domestic bureaus in all the country’s cities and provinces and 27 overseas bureaus located on five continents.

At the opening ceremony, OANA President Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf said the theme of the congress is a major issue facing news agencies. In the context that the digital technology is booming, it is vital for OANA members to improve and update methods of gathering and disseminating information as well as to enhance their cooperation, he said.

RoK Prime Minister Chung Un-chan called on leaders of news agencies to narrow the information gap between developed and developing nations, and step up partnerships to build an international information environment.

Park Jung-chan, President and CEO of the Yonhap News Agency, which is co-hosting the meeting with OANA, said Asia-Pacific news industry leaders will have a rare chance to exchange views on how to expand cooperation among regional newswire services, particularly in the face of the rapidly changing media industry environment characterised by the digital revolution.

Regional news agencies need to widen cooperation, both bilaterally and multilaterally, and increase the exchange of multimedia information in order to preserve the region’s news industry, he added./.
