Outstanding individuals and groups received certificate at the event (Source :cand)A conference to review the five-year implementation of the “Traffic and waterway safety” movement was held in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho on October 19.
The conference drew the participation of leaders and representatives from the National Traffic Safety Steering Committee (NTSC), the Ministry of Public Security, and local waterway traffic police departments.
Khuat Viet Hung, Vice Chairman of the NTSC, said that the movement, which was launched in 2011, reaped positive results and helped raise public awareness of traffic law obedience, contributing to limiting waterway accidents and ensuring social order.
Over the past five years, 516 waterway accidents occurred across the country, resulting in 409 deaths and 65 injuries.
The figures showed a 52.5 percent decrease in terms of cases and 55.3 and 50.3 percent reduction in terms of deaths and injuries, respectively, compared to the previous five years.
However, the movement is still facing a number of problems, such as local resident traffic violations as well as feeble responsibility in state traffic management.
Participants also discussed ways to overcome difficulties and obstacles to efficiently implement the movement in the future.-VNA
