Construction on an air traffic control tower began at Cat Bi international airport in northern Hai Phong city on December 11.
Once completed in the fourth quarter of 2015, the tower is expected to provide round-the-clock air control services for all arriving and departing flights.
Built at an investment of nearly 80 billion USD (3.76 million USD), the project comprises a 42.9m tower, a two-storey building and auxiliary facilities.
Cat Bi international airport serves 20 flights a day with the number of passengers rising by 38.16 percent annually over the past 5 years.
According to the airport’s development plan, by 2025 it will be capable of handling 7-8 million passengers and 100,000-250,000 tonnes of goods a year.
Hoang Thanh, Chairman of the Members’ Council of the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation, said that the project is part of a plan aiming to modernise the corporation’s facilities.-VNA
