Hanoi (VNA) – Vietnam’s development achievements over the past 80 years vividly demonstrate the resilience, vision, and sound leadership of the Party and State, as well as the determination of every Vietnamese citizen.

From a colonised nation, divided and impoverished, Vietnam endured long struggles, challenging periods of reconstruction, and comprehensive reforms to rise as a developing country with middle-income status, with increasingly high position in the international arena.

These achievements not only affirm that Vietnam’s path toward socialism is correct and suited to its conditions but also lay a solid foundation for the country to enter a new phase of development - an era of deep integration, innovation, sustainable growth, and the aspiration to rise as a strong and prosperous nation by the mid-21st century.

Drawing from practical experience and the aspiration for development, the Party has remained steadfast and proactively renewed its mindset, initiating comprehensive reforms at the 6th National Party Congress in 1986.

Since 1986, Vietnam has undergone nearly four decades of “Doi moi” (renewal), making strong advances across multiple sectors. The country gradually overcame economic and social crises, sustained continuous growth, significantly improved people’s living standards, expanded foreign relations, and actively integrated into the global economy.

Many development indicators have been internationally recognised, providing a solid foundation for stable and sustainable growth. Notably, following the 13th Party Congress in January 2021, Vietnam has clearly defined its development aspiration to build a prosperous and happy nation and become a developed and high-income country by 2045.

Despite unprecedented challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical conflicts, climate change, population aging, and non-traditional security threats, Vietnam has maintained political and social stability, and strengthened national defence and security. It has promoted digital transformation, institutional reforms, and innovation. The country’s stature, influence, and reputation continue to rise in the international arena.

Looking back over 80 years, it is clear that the sound and visionary leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the unity and resilience of the people, and the nation’s self-reliance and determination have been decisive factors behind comprehensive and remarkable achievements.

These provide a solid basis for Vietnam to confidently step into a new era— the era of national rise with deep integration, rapid and sustainable development.

Vietnam aims not only to become a developed economy but also emphasises its “socialist” character - ensuring development goes hand in hand with social progress and equity, sustainable welfare, and leaving no one behind. The development model Vietnam pursues must balance economic growth with cultural and social development, environmental protection with sovereignty protection, and between international integration with preservation of national identity.

Vietnam aims to become an upper-middle-income country with modern industry by 2030, and a high-income developed nation by 2045.

To achieve these goals, Vietnam is implementing major directions simultaneously, including renewing the growth model, developing the digital, green, and circular economy, and building a modern socialist rule-of-law state with a service-oriented, development-promoting administration. The nation is also investing in education- training, science, technology, and high-quality human resources and strengthening national defence and security to safeguard independence, sovereignty, and ensure political-social stability.

The country’s development vision goes beyond GDP figures or international rankings; it aims to build an affluent people, prosperous nation, and democratic, equitable and advanced society, where every citizen can live in peace and safety, with opportunities to develop and contribute to the community. People’s happiness becomes the central value of all development policies.

Defining such a strategic vision demonstrates that the Party remains steadfast in the goal of national independence linked with socialism, while continuously renewing development, keeping pace with global trends, and absorbing humanity’s best achievements to advance on a development path for its people and the nation’s future.

In the context of the 4th Industrial Revolution, climate change, and increasing resource depletion posing global challenges, three strategic pillars - green economy, digital transformation, and sustainable development - are identified as the primary drivers to promote growth and ensure long-term development of the country.

The country’s historic achievements across all fields over the eight decades stand as the clearest evidence of the right development path chosen by the country. Under the steadfast yet innovative leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam, and the effective governance of the State, the nation has overcome immense challenges to secure independence, safeguard sovereignty, and continuously improve people’s lives and the country’s position.

The harmony between the Party’s vision and the people’s will, between strategic leadership and concrete actions at the grassroots level, have generated a unified strength - the strength of a nation with a thousand-year history and an unyielding aspiration to rise in the new era./.
