National Assembly (NA) Chairman Vuong Dinh Hue delivered an speech at a special plenary session of the 10th NA of the People’s Power of Cuba and a celebration of the 62nd anniversary of the Giron Victory at the Havana Convention Palace on April 19 afternoon (local time).

The session, broadcast live by Cuba’s national TV station, saw the presence of First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, President of the NA of the People’s Power of Cuba Esteban Lazo Hernandez, and all the parliamentarians of the country. - Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a teleconference with representatives of the 63 cities and provinces on April 20 to launch the National Master Plan for 2021-2030 with a vision to 2050, contributing to building a strong and prosperous country, and well-being of the people.

At the event, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung announced major contents of the National Assembly’s resolution on the plan, under which Vietnam is set to become a developing nation with modern industry, high average income, and economic growth based on science, technology, innovation and digital transformation by 2030. - The sixth Vietnam - Cambodia Defence Policy Dialogue was held on April 19 at the border post of Moc Bai International Border Gate in the southern province of Tay Ninh. It was co-chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien and Secretary of State of the Cambodian Ministry of National Defene General Neang Phat. - Vietnam has been aware of the significance of the early epidemic preparedness and response through the strengthening of the health care system from the central to local levels, Ambassador Dang Hoang Giang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN has affirmed.

Giang was addressing the launching ceremony of the World Disasters Report 2022, themed “Trust, equality and local action – Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic to avert the next global crisis” in New York on April 19. Read full story

- An increasing number of businesses with products receiving the national brand title entered the top 50 brands with highest value in 2022, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Quoc Khanh said at the opening of the Vietnam National Brand Week and the National Branding Forum 2023 in Hanoi on April 20.

The number of businesses owning national branded products in the list increased sharply from 14 companies in 2018 to 21 in 2022, he said, stressing that their percentage in the top 10 most valuable brands of Vietnam also rose to 60% in 2022 from 20% in 2018. Read full story

- A conference was held in Hong Kong (China) on April 19 to tighten relations between rice businesses from Vietnam and Hong Kong as well as promote Vietnamese high-quality rice in the market.

The total import-export turnover between the two sides in 2022 neared 10.9 billion USD, down 6% compared to 2021. In the first three months of 2023, the trade turnover reached 2.5 billion USD, down 28% over the same period last year. Read full story

- Vietnamese tourism businesses are making efforts to draw Chinese visitors with demand for deluxe services, sensing that the segment is expanding after COVID-19.

According to the Vietnam Travel and Marketing Transports JSC (Vietravel), the high-spending group is expected to make up 5-10% of the company's total customers, doubling the figure of 3-5% in the period before the pandemic. REad full story

- Noi Bai International Airport in Hanoi is anticipated to serve 96,000 passengers and 580 flights during the upcoming five-day break from April 29-May 3.

This estimated number of passengers will be 20% more than the same period last year but it is yet to break the record set during last summer’s peak season, said a representative of the management of the airport. Read full story

- Vietnam sent 37,923 labourers abroad in the first three months of 2023, accounting for 34.48% of the whole year plan, and more than 15 times higher than the same period in 2022.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for labour in many markets increased sharply, many domestic companies promoted training and sending workers abroad. Read full story

- The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) pledges to work closely with the Vietnamese Government to develop migrant workers’ skills, give them better employment chances, and improve their migration experience, IOM Chief of Mission in Vietnam Park Mihyung said at a consultation held on April 19 to discuss the cooperation programme on labour migration for 2024 - 2028. - Vice chairman of Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee Bui Xuan Cuong on April 20 received Regional Representative for Asia - Pacific of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) in Hanoi Edgar Doerig who is paying a working visit to the city.

At the meeting, Cuong asked Edgar Doerrig to support the operation of cultural and French teaching centres in the city and at the Institute of Cultural Exchange with France (IDECAF). Read full story

- A send-off ceremony was held in Hanoi on April 19 for an 1,003-strong Vietnamese sports delegation to the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32) that will be held in Cambodia.
