- Party General Secretary and State President To Lam received the ambassadors of Argentina, Algeria, Germany, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) who came to present their credentials on August 12.

Hosting Argentinian Ambassador Marcos Antonio Bednarski, Lam affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to and wishes to further intensify the traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation with Argentina, a partner of leading importance in Latin America. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on August 12 inspected the outcomes of the periodic maintenance of the Mausoleum of President Ho Chi Minh, and had a working session with the mausoleum's Management Board on its performance in the first half of the year.

The board reported that from August 15, 2023 to July 31, 2024, nearly 2 million domestic and foreign visitors came to the mausoleum to pay respect to the founder of modern Vietnam. Meanwhile, during January – June this year, more than 1.6 million tourists visited the President Ho Chi Minh relic site at the Presidential Palace, and 430,000 to the Ho Chi Minh Museum. - The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee convened its 5th thematic session on law-building on August 12 morning under the chair of NA Chairman Tran Thanh Man.

In his opening remarks, the top legislator highlighted the significance of the meeting, saying that law-makers will discuss the revision of 10 out of 11 draft laws that were first submitted for debate at the NA's 7th session, including the Law on Geology and Minerals, the Law on amendments and supplements to a number of articles of the Law on Pharmacy, the Law on Trade Unions (revised), the revised Law on Human Trafficking Prevention and Control, the revised Notary Law, the Law on Cultural Heritage (revised), the Law on Urban and Rural Planning, the Law on Fire Prevention, Fighting and Rescue, the revised Law on Value Added Tax, and the Law on Juvenile Justice.Read full story

- Minister of National Defence General Phan Van Giang is leading a high-ranking delegation of the Ministry of National Defence on a working visit to Russia to attend the 10th International Military-Technical Forum (Army-2024) and inauguration ceremony of a monument dedicated to Vietnamese volunteer soldiers who joined battles to defend Moscow in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945).

- Director General of the Cuban News Agency (ACN) Edda Diz Garcés has expressed confidence that General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee and State President To Lam will continue to uphold unity and solidarity and successfully implement the goals and tasks set by the 13th National Party Congress.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency in Havana, the official also said that Lam will help promote the traditional and exemplary relationship between Cuba and Vietnam. Read full story

- A delegation of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) led by Deputy Minister Tran Hong Thai has paid a working visit to Australia to boost bilateral cooperation in science, technology and innovation.

During the eight-day visit ending August 10, the delegation held working sessions with the Australian Department of Industry, Science and Resources (DoISR) and the Australian Research Council (ARC) in Canberra. Read full story

- Bad debts in the banking system in the first five months of 2024 continued to increase by some 75.9 trillion VND (3 billion USD) against the end of 2023.

Viet Dragon Securities Company (VDSC) cited the latest data from the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) showing that the bad debt ratio of the banking system as of the end of May 2024 was at 4.94%, higher than the 4.55% at the end of 2023. Read full story

- The Vietnamese Embassy in Russia is ready to evacuate people from areas bordering Ukraine in Russia’s Kursk oblast to safe places if needed, said Counselor Vu Xuan Viet, head of the Consular Division and deputy head of the Community Affairs Board of the embassy on August 11.

Viet said that in the context of the complicated conflicts in Kursk, the embassy maintains daily phone contact with the Vietnamese Association in the region to monitor the situation and guide people on how to respond to any emergency. Read full story

- The management board of the Ban Gioc Waterfall Tourism Site under the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of the northern border province of Cao Bang has announced the temporary suspension of tour services for visitors at Ban Gioc – Detian waterfalls on the Vietnam - China border from August 11 until further notice.

It cited an incident in the scenic area on China's side as the reason for the decision. Tourists who have registered and paid fees will be considered for a refund or an amicable resolution./. Read full story
