- US President Joe Biden has congratulated Vietnamese President To Lam on his election as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee.

In his statement published on the White House’s website on August 7, President Biden wrote: “I congratulate President To Lam on his selection as the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam’s Central Committee. Nearly one year ago, Vietnam and the United States launched our Comprehensive Strategic Partnership - marking a new era of strong cooperation between our nations.”Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on August 8 asked ministries, sectors and localities to build and issue their own plans to finalise major transport infrastructure projects in 2025, clarifying the responsibility of particular parties and timeline for particular projects, ensuring the completion of the construction of 3,000km of highways by the end of next year.

Chairing the 13th meeting of the State steering committee for key national transport projects, PM Chinh noted that currently, the country has 40 large-scale transport projects and 92 component projects crossing 48 centrally-run cities and provinces.Read full story

- National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man on August 8 made an on-site inspection of the construction of the Long Thanh international airport in the southern province of Dong Nai.

Addressing a working session with units involved, the leader affirmed that Party and State leaders are watching the progress of the critical project as it is of strategic significance to the socio-economic development, defence, and security of the province, the southern key economic region, and the entire nation, expected to create some 200,000 jobs and anticipated to become one of the modern air transport hubs in the region. - National Assembly Vice Chairman Nguyen Khac Dinh had a meeting with Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof on August 7 in his working visit to the Southeast Asian country from August 6-9.

On behalf of the State and people of Vietnam, Dinh showed sincere gratitude to the Malaysian government for assigning Deputy PM Yusof to attend the recent state funeral for General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Nguyen Phu Trong. Read full story

- Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son on August 7 evening met with representatives of the Association of Vietnamese Intellectuals in Japan (AVIJ), and awarded orders and medals to Japanese friends, as part of his official visit to the Asian country.

FM Son thanked overseas Vietnamese (OV) intellectuals living, studying and working in Japan for their contributions to the nation’s development, affirming that he will promptly and fully convey ideas and solutions proposed at the meeting to administrations at all levels and sectors in the homeland, towards appropriately reflecting them in the Government's policies. - Vietnamese Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Hoang Xuan Chien and Permanent Secretary of State at the Cambodian Defence Ministry General Chay Saing Yun have compared notes on defence cooperation orientations between the two countries while co-chairing a dialogue in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

At the seventh Vietnam-Cambodia policy dialogue on August 7, Chien affirmed the good neighbourliness, traditional friendship, comprehensive cooperation, and long-term sustainability between the two countries. Read full story

- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka G. Weerasinghe has expressed his belief that Vietnam will maintain its political stability and social order, make record socio-economic achievements, and promote its role and position in the region and the world.

In an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) on State President To Lam’s election as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, Weerasinghe held that the leader will continue leading the Party, founded by late President Ho Chi Minh, to take firm steps in the cause of socialism building. - The Vietnamese Embassy in Bangladesh has been prioritising citizen protection in the context of the complex developments in the host country, Ambassador Nguyen Manh Cuong has affirmed.

The diplomat noted that there are approximately 200 Vietnamese expatriates in various regions of the country, with the largest concentrations in the capital Dhaka and the city of Chittagong. The community includes those married to locals and long-term residents, experts, engineers, and skilled workers involved in projects, businesspeople, and representatives of Vietnamese companies, a group of about 10 students at the Asian University for Women in Chittagong, and some others exploring local business opportunities. - The 8.5-km elevated section of the Nhon-Hanoi Station metro line, running from Nhon to Cau Giay, started commercial operation on August 8.

Top leader’s visits opening new phase of deeper, more effective ties with India, Sri Lanka: FM

Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung described the visits as particularly important and historic, taking place at a meaningful moment as Vietnam and India mark the 10th anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and just one month after the top leader of Vietnam assumed his new position. For Sri Lanka, this was the highest-level visit by a Vietnamese leader since the two countries established diplomatic relations.

Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang said that the Vietnamese delegation made important contributions to the summit’s success, reflecting the foreign policy orientation set out by the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which continues to place ASEAN at the centre of Vietnam’s regional engagement, as well as its commitment to proactive, positive and responsible contributions to ASEAN Community-building process.
