Hanoi, (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

-Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on December 28tasked the banking sector with ensuring monetary security and safety, as wellas legitimate rights and interests of people, businesses and relevant subjectsin 2023 and the following years.

Speaking at a hybrid conference held by the StateBank of Vietnam (SBV) in Hanoi, the leader stressed that the sector shouldoperate transparently and healthily, with liquidity flowing smoothly in anycircumstances.Read full story

-Inflation has so far been controlled in linewith the set target, and the macro-economic situation stabilised with majorbalances of the economy ensured, Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai said at theyear-end meeting of the Price Management Steering Committee on December 28.

-Vietnam'sindustrial sector grew by 9% in 2022, according to a report published on Mondayby the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MoIT).

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien said the sector had madesignificant progress despite numerous difficulties and challenges includingcomplicated geo-political developments around the world, rising tradeprotectionism, disrupted supply chains in the aftermath of a global pandemicand tightened monetary policies by major central banks. Read full story

-Foreigndirect investment (FDI) in real estate topped 4.4 billion USD as of December20, accounting for over 16% of the total FDI capital registered in Vietnam, andup 1.8 billion USD year-on-year.

According to the Foreign Investment Agency underthe Ministry of Planning and Investment, there were 75 new projects in thesector during this year with a combined capital of more than 1.8 billion USD,and 37 others adjusting their investment capital up by a total 1 billion USD.

Meanwhile, 103 transactions of capitalcontribution and share purchase were recorded in the sector with anaccumulative value of around 1.6 billion USD.Read full story

-TheCentral Institute for Economic Management (CIEM) in collaboration with theJakarta-based Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) held aworkshop on industrial development in Vietnam in Hanoi on December 28.

Speaking at the event, CIEM Director Tran Thi HongMinh said that the Vietnamese economy has been recovering strongly from severeimpacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

However, it is facing the risk of fragmented andunfocused reforms which leads to difficulties in creating more breakthroughs ifno newer and more drastic ways and solutions are taken.Read full story

-The annual “Xuan Que Huong” (Homeland Spring), the biggestexternal and cultural event held for overseas Vietnamese (OVs) on the occasionof the Lunar New Year festival, will take place in Hanoi on January 14, withabout 3,000 people taking part, including 1,000 OVs.

-The Hoi An People’s Committee in the central province of QuangNam on December 28 started work to restore Cau (Bridge) Pagoda - an iconictourist attraction of the ancient city.

Top leader’s visits opening new phase of deeper, more effective ties with India, Sri Lanka: FM

Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung described the visits as particularly important and historic, taking place at a meaningful moment as Vietnam and India mark the 10th anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and just one month after the top leader of Vietnam assumed his new position. For Sri Lanka, this was the highest-level visit by a Vietnamese leader since the two countries established diplomatic relations.

Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang said that the Vietnamese delegation made important contributions to the summit’s success, reflecting the foreign policy orientation set out by the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which continues to place ASEAN at the centre of Vietnam’s regional engagement, as well as its commitment to proactive, positive and responsible contributions to ASEAN Community-building process.
