Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- The merger of the three northern provinces of Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh to form a single Phu Tho province is expected to create favourable conditions for the development of economic corridors across plains, midlands, and mountainous regions, stated Party General Secretary To Lam at a working session with the Standing Boards of the three localities' Party Committees on June 10.

General Secretary Lam emphasised that the merger of the three provinces marks a strategic turning point for the broader northern midland and mountainous region. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh had a meeting with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in Nice, France, on June 9 (local time) during their attendance of the third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3).

The UN Secretary-General affirmed that meetings with Vietnamese leaders, including PM Chinh, at international conferences have become a tradition in the partnership between UN and Vietnam. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh held a working session with President of the European Council Antonio Costa, and a brief meeting with President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen on June 9 during his attendance at the 3rd UN Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France.

During the meetings, PM Chinh expressed his belief that under the leadership of Costa and Leyen, the European Union (EU) will overcome challenges and continue to thrive. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh joined global leaders on June 9 at a special treaty event to advocate for the signing Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement), widely known as the High Seas Treaty – the most important ocean legislation since the dawn of the new millennium.

Thirty-five nations that have signed or officially deposited their instruments of ratification or approval took part in the event, which was within the framework of the ongoing third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France. Read full story

- The US-based tech giant Qualcomm officially inaugurated a new artificial intelligence research and development (AI R&D) centre in Vietnam on June 10.

The new centre, staffed by a team of scientists, researchers, and AI specialists working in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, forms part of Qualcomm’s global AI research group. It is set to play a key role in developing cutting-edge generative AI and agentic AI solutions, with applications spanning smartphones, personal computers, extended reality (XR), automotive technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT). - A ceremony was held on June 10 to launch the photo book “100 Years of Vietnam’s Revolutionary Press (1925–2025)”, marking the 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day (June 21, 1925 – 2025).

Compiled and published by the Vietnam News Agency Publishing House, this is the first-ever photo book on the history of Vietnam’s revolutionary journalism. It features concise articles and more than 1,000 rare photographs and documents carefully selected from archives nationwide. Each image was rigorously vetted for authenticity, including its origin, date, subject, context, and intended message. Read full story

452 lawmakers, or 94.56% of the total number of deputies present, voted in favour the revised Law on Corporate Income Tax, while the amended Excise Tax Law was adopted with 448 out of 454 deputies present voting in favour, accounting for 93.72% of the total.

PM Pham Minh Chinh visits Sweden’s Uppsala University

The Vietnamese leader proposed Uppsala University establish a partnership with a national university in Vietnam; strengthen collaboration in education, research, and academic exchanges with Vietnamese institutions; and offer scholarships to Vietnamese students and researchers, thus advancing the newly established sectoral strategic partnership in science, technology, and innovation between the two countries.
