Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Party General Secretary and State President To Lam met with President of the European Commission (EC) Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York on September 24 afternoon (local time), as part of his working trip to the US.

At the meeting with the EC leader, the two sides expressed satisfaction with the positive developments in their comprehensive partnership and cooperation. Read full story

- The state visit to Cuba by Vietnamese Party General Secretary and State President To Lam will create a significant momentum for the brotherhood between the two nations, according to a Cuban international policy researcher.

In his article published recently on CubaDebate, the most visited official news site in the Caribbean nation, Ruvislei González Sáez, Vice President of the Cuba-Vietnam Friendship Association, highlighted the significance of the visit, affirming that it will mark the beginning of a new chapter in the history of bilateral relations. - Party General Secretary and President To Lam had meetings with leaders of a number of international organisations in New York on September 24 (local time), as part of his US trip.

Meeting UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Lam praised the increasingly important role of the UN in global governance, promoting multilateral cooperation, upholding international law, narrowing the gap and promoting development, and ensuring full participation of all countries. Read full story

- The Politburo has recently asked for opinions of the Party Central Committee regarding the investment policy for a North-South high-speed railway before the Government submits it to the National Assembly at its 8th session.

According to a pre-feasibility study report, the Ministry of Transport proposes to invest in a high-speed railway with a design speed of 350 km/h; a total length of 1,541 km; double tracks, gauge of 1,435 mm; and a total investment of approximately 67.34 billion USD. Read full story

- Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh inaugurated the Centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (C4IR) of Ho Chi Minh City at the Saigon Hi-Tech Park in Thu Duc city on September 25 as part of the HCM City Economic Forum 2024.

The HCM City C4IR, part of an agreement between Vietnam and the WEF, is one of the 19 C4IRs of the World Economic Forum (WEF) and the second one in Southeast Asia. It operates in the form of a public-private partnership, with founders including large-scale enterprises in Vietnam and HCM City. Read full story

- The Asian Development Bank (ADB) maintained its positive economic outlook for Vietnam, forecasting the country’s GDP growth at 6% in 2024 and 6.2% in the following year.

At a press conference to launch the Asian Development Outlook (ADO) report on September 25, ADB Country Director for Vietnam Shantanu Chakraborty said the Vietnamese economy showed robust recovery in the first half and will keep its growth momentum despite global uncertainties, attributing the steady recovery to improving industrial production and a strong rebound in trade. - The Ministry of Construction always encourages and supports US companies to collaborate and invest in construction projects with Vietnamese enterprises to enhance the quality of human resources and real estate products, Minister Nguyen Thanh Nghi has said.

Meeting with Solomon Greene, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy Development and Research at the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), in Washington DC recently, Nghi shared Vietnam's policies on social housing development and apartment renovation, as well as its experiences in responding to climate change as well as disaster and disease prevention. Top leader’s visits opening new phase of deeper, more effective ties with India, Sri Lanka: FM

Minister of Foreign Affairs Le Hoai Trung described the visits as particularly important and historic, taking place at a meaningful moment as Vietnam and India mark the 10th anniversary of their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and just one month after the top leader of Vietnam assumed his new position. For Sri Lanka, this was the highest-level visit by a Vietnamese leader since the two countries established diplomatic relations.
