Kon Tum (VNA) – The Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the Central Highlands province of Kon Tum and the Committees of the Lao Front for National Construction of Attapeu and Sekong provinces met on September 25 to review their cooperation from 2019-2024.

Over the past five years, the three provinces have implemented their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) effectively. Key areas of collaboration included building peaceful, cooperative border relations and encouraging local communities to participate in border management.

So far, 336 villages and over 1,200 households in Kon Tum have voluntarily signed up to monitor the border and border markers. Local authorities and residents have also worked together to exchange information and prevent illegal border crossings.

The cooperation has supported socio-economic development, healthcare, and disaster recovery efforts in the localities. Notably, Kon Tum provided medical supplies and financial assistance to help Attapeu and Sekong during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Both sides have engaged in cultural and economic exchanges, further deepening ties. From 2019-2024, joint efforts led to the discovery and repatriation of 41 sets of remains of Vietnamese soldiers who died during wartime in Laos, demonstrating the deep historical connection between the two countries.

At the meeting, the three provinces discussed future cooperation, focusing on educating citizens, especially younger generations, about the policies of both nations and promoting peace and development along the border. Continued efforts will include fostering exchanges between border villages and supporting local authorities in managing and maintaining the border system./.
