APEC 2017: Ministers adopt four initiatives

The 29th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM) concluded successfully in the central city of Da Nang on November 9 after three sessions, passing four main initiatives to be submitted to the leaders for approval.

Da Nang (VNA) –The 29th APEC Ministerial Meeting (AMM) concluded successfully inthe central city of Da Nang on November 9 after three sessions, passing fourmain initiatives to be submitted to the leaders for approval.

The information was released by Deputy Minister and Foreign Minister Pham BinhMinh, who is Chairman of the APEC 2017 National Committee, at a pressconference held in the International Media Centre on the same day.

They are the APEC Cross-border E-commerce Facilitation Framework, the APEC Strategyfor Green, Sustainable and Innovative MSMEs, the Food Security and Climate Change Multi-Year Action Plan2018-20 (MYAP), and the Action Plan on Rural-UrbanDevelopment to Strengthen Food Security and Quality Growth (AP).
 
According toDeputy PM Minh, the ministers affirmed the determination to maintain APECcooperation mechanism and discussed many concrete measures to boost trade and investmentfacilitation by implementing the Bogor Goals; step up quality growth; enhance investmentconnectivity, infrastructure development, and institutional reform; minimise disasterrisks and increase communities’ resilience; and raise members’ internationaleconomic integration.

They also consented to create a new momentum to continue contributing tomaintaining Asia-Pacific as a driver for global economic growth amid the newtrend of technology, globalisation and intensive connectivity.


The ministers emphasisedthe importance of accelerating structural reform, increasing productivity andsupporting MSMEs as well as equipping labourers with new skills to help themadapt to jobs in the digital era, ensuring food security, and developingagriculture and rural areas in response to climate change.

In addition, the ministers also agreed on a number of documents that directAPEC cooperation to be submitted to the APEC leaders. These documents focus on narrowingthe development gap; ensuring economic, financial and social inclusion; openingnew development potential for the region through promoting human resourcesdevelopment and high-quality education; and creating conditions for women andyoung people to engage in economic development and enjoy benefits of free tradeand sustainable growth.

Minh said the adoption of these documents is a milestone of APEC collaborationin 2017.

He added that the ministers also agreed on the need to continue maintaining discussionson new cooperation orientations for APEC.


Co-chairing thepress conference, Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh said the 29th AMM is greatly significant to not only Vietnam and APEC economies but also theinternational community.

The meeting represented the determination to support trade liberalisation inthe Asia-Pacific as well as Vietnam’s active contributions to the region andthe world, he said, adding issues discussed and approved at the event bring in benefitsto all APEC economies

The ministers highly valued theinitiatives proposed by Vietnam, saying they reflect the economy’s active internationalintegration policy, he said.-VNA

Agricultural envoys ordered to boost Thai crop exports
