ASEAN, partners join hands in fighting transnational crime

Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their dialogue partners have agreed to intensify cooperation in the fight against transnational crime.
Members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their dialogue partners have agreed to intensify cooperation in the fight against transnational crime.

They reached the agreement during the 12th Senior Official Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) and related meetings with dialogue partners held recently in Bangkok , Thailand .

According to a press release issued on September 26 by the ASEAN Secretariat, participants to the SOMTC heard a report on the progress of the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime, which gave update information on ASEAN’s efforts in the 2010-12 period.

They discussed measures to improve the effectiveness and quality for the cooperation programme in the 2013-15 period.

The meeting of SOMTC and dialogue partners, namely Australia, China, the EU, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, Russia and the US worked on methods to enhance cooperation in anti transnational crime projects, with priorities given to anti terrorism, human trafficking, and cyber crime.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister Chalem Ubumrung said the transnational crime poses a threat to all people, affirming that cooperation within ASEAN and that between the group and its dialogue partners will be further strengthened.-VNA

Indonesia plans task force to combat sale of counterfeit goods

The minister said that the report has prompted the Ministry of MSMEs to move toward the formation of a task force for the protection and empowerment of MSMEs in Indonesia, adding that the planned task force would be empowered to take action against those involved in the distribution and sale of counterfeit goods.
