The 20th ASEAN Summit opened in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on April 3.

Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung joined leaders of other ASEAN member countries at the event.

Opening the summit, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that the past four decades of development has proved ASEAN capacity in building a people-centered community with economic prosperity and political stability.

That is also the reason why Cambodia has chosen the theme “ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny” for 2012, the year it serves as Chair of ASEAN, said the Cambodian PM.

The PM spelled out seven priorities for ASEAN in 2012, including strengthening the mechanism for ensuring financial stability, guaranteeing timely implementation of the Roadmap for ASEAN Community Building (2009-2015), prioritising the establishment of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015 and promoting the speedy implementation of the Master Plan on ASEAN Connectivity, among others.

He also emphasised that dialogues between ASEAN leaders and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), representatives of social and mass organisations and youth are an essential part in building the ASEAN Community by 2015.

At this summit, the leaders are expected to discuss and adopt the Chairman's Statement of the 20th ASEAN Summit and the 45th ASEAN founding anniversary; the Phnom Penh Declaration “ASEAN: One Community, One Destiny”; and the Declaration on Drug-Free ASEAN by 2015 among others.-VNA
