Hanoi (VNA) – The Asian-Pacific countries’ nomination of Vietnam as the only candidate of the region for a non-permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2020-2021 tenure reflects their high support for and trust in the country’s role and capacity, said Spokesperson of the Foreign Ministry Le Thi Thu Hang.
At the ministry’s regular press conference in Hanoi on May 31, Hang said the Asia-Pacific Group at the United Nations met on its meeting on May 25, agreeing to nominate Vietnam as its only candidate for the non-permanent seat at the UNSC for the 2020-2021 tenure at the voting to be held in June, 2019.
The nomination is an initial important outcome that makes it easier for Vietnam to canvass the support from other UN member countries in other regions in the coming time, she said.
“Vietnam has participated actively and responsibly in activities of the UN, like the Human Rights Council in the 2014-2016 tenure, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in the 2016-2018 tenure, and the UNESCO Executive Council in the 2015-2019 tenure,” Hang said.
“Vietnam has accomplished soundly its non-permanent membership at the UNSC in the 2008-2009 term. The country has proactively, constructively and responsibly joined in the council’s activities and made initiatives contributing to maintaining international peace and security, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world. The accomplishment of its non-permanent member role in the 2008-09 UNSC helped step up the relations between Vietnam and other countries and international organizations as well as heighten the country’s international prestige and position.”-VNA
