The Ministry of Health on Nov. 30 reported that a 23-year-old man had died from avian influenza type H5N1 in the northwestern province of Dien Bien , bringing the total number of fatalities this year in the country to five.

The man first showed signs of flu – a high fever, coughing and breathing difficulties – on November 11. He was admitted to Dien Bien Provincial Hospital on November 26 where he was diagnosed with avian flu and pneumonia. He died two days later.

Health authorities said that the patient had eaten duck’s blood curd one week before he started developing flu symptoms. The National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiologyconfirmed that he tested positive for H5N1 on November 29.

The fatality was the first in the province since the first outbreak of the disease was recorded in Noong Luong and Thanh Yen communes, Dien Bien district.

At the same time, two more fatalities attributed to A/H1N1 flu were reported by the health ministry recently, bringing the total number of fatalities from the so-called “super flu” in the country this year to 44.

So far there have been 11,000 cases of H1N1 flu in Vietnam./.
