The National League for Democracy (NLD) party announced its Chairperson Aung San Suu Kyi has won the parliamentary by-elections, securing a seat in Myanmar's lower house with 75 percent of the ballot in Kawhmu Township constituency near Yangon.

The NLD also said that they won at least 10 of 45 vacant seats of parliamentary representatives scattered in 45 township constituencies.

The final result is set to be formally announced within a week.

The by-elections was observed by foreign diplomats and United Nations officials based in Myanmar as well as over 150 invited international observers and media persons from ASEAN and its dialogue partners, including the European Union and the United States.

Talking about the elections, ASEAN General Secretary Surin Pitsuwan on Apr. 1 said that voting in Myanmar's historic by-elections went "rather smoothly.”

He added that despite claims of ballot irregularities he has not heard "anything serious".-VNA
