Phnom Penh (VNA) – President of the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) Kem Sokha has been arrested on charges of treason and espionage.
Cambodia’s Fresh News cited a statement of the Cambodian Government as saying the CNRP leader was seized at his home at 00:35 am on September 3 by the police.
The capture was made after Cambodia’s police found a video broadcast by Cambodian Broadcasting Network (CBN) headquartered in Australia and other evidence showing Kem Sokha and his accomplices secretly conspired with foreigners to harm Cambodia.
The Cambodian Government described the above act as treason and espionage and said the court will handle this case according to the country’s regulations.
Kem Sokha was elected as CNRP President in March 2017 to replace Sam Rainsy who stepped down in the previous month.-VNA
