A six-year-old boy in Cambodia’s southern province of Kandal has beenconfirmed for H5N1 avian influenza, raising the total number ofreported cases so far this year to 17.
Theinformation was announced in a joint statement by the CambodianMinistry of Health and the World Health Organisation (WHO) on August 21.
The boy was confirmed positive for human H5N1 avianinfluenza on August 17 after he caught fever, headache, abdominal pain,vomiting, cough and lethargy, the statement said, adding that the boycame into contact with sick poultry.
"The boy has now recovered," it said.
Earlier, two H5N1 avian flu cases were announced on August 14,including a 9-year-old boy from Battambang province and a 5-year-oldgirl from Kandal province.
The 9-year-old boy diedfollowing several days in hospital, becoming the 10 th fatality causedby the virus in the country this year.
Since 2004, a total of 38 people have tested positive with H5N1 in Cambodia with 29 ending in death.-VNA
