Phnom Penh (VNA) – The extraordinary congress of the ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) wrapped up on January 21 in Phnom Penh, approving seven  important decisions.

Presided over by CPP President and Prime Minister Hun Sen, the three-day event affirmed the conspiracy of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) to organise a “colour revolution” to overthrow the government was prevented lawfully and effectively.

The congress adopted the CPP’s five-year political platform (2018-2023) for national construction and defence. It decided to add 342 members to its central committee and remove the names of 22 members who passed away, lifting the total number of members to 865.

It affirmed the resolve to work with other political parties, the National Election Committee and social organisations to ensure fairness and freedom in the Senate election and the general election.

The congress also called on CPP members and supporters to promote solidarity, towards enhancing democratic institutions and ensuring freedom of and observance of the law.

The CPP has ruled the country since 1979. In the general election in 2013, the CPP won the majority receiving 68 parliamentary seats against 55 seats for the now-banned CNRP.-VNA
