Phnom Penh (VNA) – Cambodia’s fourth senate election was held on February 25 at 33 polling stations across the country.
Some 11,670 out of 11,695 voters or 99.79 percent went to vote, according to the National Election Committee’s preliminary statistics released at a press conference the same day.
The NEC said that the election took place in a stable environment, without demonstrations or disorder.
A total of 276 observers from 12 non-governmental organisations monitored the election.
Four parties took part in the vote, including the Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), the Funcinpec Party (FCP), the Cambodian Youth Party (CYP) and the Khmer National United Party (KNUP).
The CPP currently holds 79 parliamentary seats and 11,051 commune seats. The Senate has 62 seats, but the vote was held for 58 seats only, as two senators will be appointed by King Norodom Sihamoni and two others by the National Assembly.
The election’s preliminary result is expected to be released on February 25 night while its official result is scheduled to be announced on March 3. If there are complaints, it will be uncovered the next day.
At the previous election held in January 2012, the CPP won 46 out of 61 seats.-VNA
