Phnom Penh (VNA) – The National Election Committee (NEC) of Cambodia reaffirmed that the country's 6th mandate National Assembly (NA) election will be held as scheduled on July 29.
NEC spokesman Hang Puthea said on March 29 that the general election will take place on July 29 as scheduled to elect 125 members of parliament.
The NEC also announced that political parties have 15 days to register for the national election, starting from April 30 to May 14, 2018.
The announcement was made after the dissolved opposition party – the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) continued calling for a delay of the upcoming election until it is restored and can take part in the election.
According to the Cambodian Ministry of Interior, 37 political parties have been officially recognized so far. Many political parties have declared to run for the election.
The NEC suggested the United Nations send observers or set up an office at its headquarters to observe the election earlier this month at a working session with the UN’s Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Rhona Smith.
Rhona Smith asked the NEC to ensure fairness, transparency and honesty in the upcoming elections. However, she has not answered the NEC’s proposal.-VNA
