Cambodia, Thailand agree to draw troops from disputed area

Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to comply with the order of the International Court of Justice to withdraw their troops from the disputed border area surrounding the Preah Vihear temple.

Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to comply with the order of theInternational Court of Justice to withdraw their troops from thedisputed border area surrounding the Preah Vihear temple.

The agreement was reached during talks between newly appointed ThaiDefense Minister Yuthasak Sasiprapha and his Cambodia counterpart, TeaBanh in Phnom Penh on September 23.

CambodianDefense Minister Tea Banh told reporters after the talks that PhnomPenh and Bangkok had agreed to implement the International Court ofJustice verdict.

Cambodian Defence Minister TeaBanh said that Cambodia and Thailand have agreed with each otherto comply with the International Court of Justice order on trooppull-out at the area near Preah Vihear temple and to allow Indonesianobservers to monitor ceasefire at the area. However, the exact date forthe troop withdrawal will be discussed at the meeting of the GeneralBorder Commission in the future.

Meanwhile, theThai Defence Minsiter affirmed no more tension between Cambodian andThai troops. He added that Thailand ’s Defence Ministry is ready tohold a meeting with the Cambodian side in order to bring bettersituation to the border.

Thai Defense MinisterYuthasak Sasiprapha said w hen he returns from Cambodia , he willpropose that the Thai cabinet organise a meeting between the twocountries’ Defence Ministries during the General Border Committeemeeting.

On the same day, the Thai Defence Ministerwas received by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, who said that theCambodia-Thailand relation has returned to normal and the two countries’armies must cooperate in bringing a peaceful life to people livingalong the joint border line.

Thailand-Cambodiaborder tension has eased since the former Thai Prime Minister ThaksinShinawatra's Pheu Thai Party won a landslide victory in the generalelections on July 3./.
