Cambodia's King Father Norodom Sihanouk, who died at the age of 89 last month, will be cremated on February 4 following a national ceremony, Prime Minister Hun Sen said on November 26.

The cremation will be preceded by a procession on January 1 that will see Sihanouk's coffin carried from the royal palace in Phnom Penh to a funeral pyre, which is expected to draw more than a million mourners.

Hun Sen added that a ceremony to grant a new name “Preah Borom Ratanak Kod” to the late King Father will be solemnly held on November 28.

According to the Cambodian custom, the King of Cambodia has three names – upon his birth, when he is crowned, and upon his death.

Out of respect for the late monarch, the Cambodian Government has cancelled the boat racing in Phnom Penh, as part of the traditional Ok Om BoK festival which runs from November 27-29.-VNA
