Hanoi (VNA) – The “Undetectable =Untransmittable” (U=U) campaign was officially launched in Hanoi on November 28on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of World AIDS Day (December 1).

The campaign aims to persuade people living with HIV to takeantiretroviral (ARV) drugs as prescribed by doctors to reduce the virus load intheir body to undetectable levels so that they do not transmit it to theirsexual partners.

The campaign also seeks to improve public awareness of earlyHIV testing and ARV therapy, and to reduce discrimination against people withHIV.

The campaign is jointly held by the Hanoi Medical Universityand the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention in Vietnam to disseminatethe campaign’s message to the community.

The university has provided support for 10 communityorganisations in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, andthe northern province of Dien Bien to carry out initiatives.

Undetectable means untransmittable is the message of a newUNAIDS Explainer. With 20 years of evidence demonstrating that HIV treatment ishighly effective in reducing the transmission of HIV, the evidence is now clearthat people living with HIV with an undetectable viral load cannot transmit HIVsexually.

The message has been so far recognised by 782 healthorganisations in nearly 100 nations and territories.–VNA
