Clashes kill one, injure 20 others in Thailand

The Thai army on the night of May 13 clashed with “red-shirts” protesters at the second gate of Lumpini park in Bangkok, leaving one killed and over 20 people injured, local media said.

The clashes occurred around 08:40 p.m. afterdemonstrators were trying to remove the orange cones used to block traffic. Thenprotesters tried to prevent the army from coming out of the Lumpini park, some2km from the “red- shirts” rally site, by putting bonsai in front of one of thepark' s gates.

Shortly after that, the army fired rubber bullets todisperse the protesters, leaving many injured. One protester was shot in thehead and killed.

The clash broke out just more than an hour after ananti-government leader, Maj-General Khattiya Sawasdipol, was also shot on hishead at the rally site near the Silom Road in central Bangkok.

Earlier,Thailand’s Centre for Resolution of Emergency Situation (CRES) declaredextension of state of emergency to more provinces, in addition to existing areasin capital Bangkok and nearby areas, including northern Chiang Mai province,northeastern Udon Thani, and Nakhon Ratchasima province.

The state ofemergency, which was announced on April 7 in a bid to ensure security for thegeneral public, took effect immediately after it was announced.

The CRESalso announced ban on entrance to Petchaburi, Phayathai, Wireless, Rama IV, andRatchaprarop area in central Bangkok. These areas are located around theanti-government rally site Rathchaprasong Intersection in the centre of capitalBangkok./.
