The construction of a monument to honour Vietnam’s Heroic Mothers began in Tam Ky city in central Quang Nam province on July 27, War Invalids and Fallen Soldiers Day.

The 18.5m-high sandstone monument has in its centre a statue of aheroic Vietnamese mother, modelled by mother Nguyen Thi Thu who is 106years old.

Mother Thu, who lives in Dien Ban district, Quang Nam province, hadnine children, one son-in-law and one grandchild who sacrificed theirlives during the war against the US.

Inside the statue there are lists of names of nearly 50,000 heroicmothers, and stories telling about their lives and the contributionsthey made to the nation as well as pictures and art works related tothe mothers.

The total cost of the monument is estimated at 81 billion VND, paid forby State and local budgets and fund-raising campaigns initiated by theVietnam Women’s Union and Radio the Voice of Vietnam.

The construction is scheduled to last for three years and should be completed in 2011.

On addressing the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhanhighlighted the great contributions made by heroic Vietnamese mothers,saying that Quang Nam province had the biggest number of fallensoldiers and heroic mothers.

Former Vice State President Nguyen Thi Binh and many heroic mothers andrevolutionary veterans nationwide also attended the ceremony./.
