Cuba marks Uncle Ho’s birthday and reunification

The 35th anniversary of the Liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification along with the 120th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19) was celebrated in Havana on May 11.
The 35th anniversary of the Liberation of southern Vietnam and national reunification along with the 120th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh (May 19) was celebrated in Havana on May 11.

The ceremony was co-hosted by the Vietnamese Embassy in Cuba and the Organisation of Solidarity between the Peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America (OSPAAAL).

When giving his welcoming speech, Vietnamese Ambassador Vu Chi Cong reminded everyone present that the victory on April 30, which finally liberated southern Vietnam and led to national reunification, was an extremely historic event for the Vietnamese people.

The glorious victory was attributable to the strength of the nation’s unity under the leadership of the Communist Party of Vietnam and President Ho Chi Minh as well as the valuable assistance and solidarity from a number of sympathetic countries and friends worldwide, including the Cuban people, he added.

The diplomat highlighted the contributions that President Ho Chi Minh had made to Vietnam ’s national liberation and the struggle for peace, independence, social justice and progress of many peoples across the world.

OSPAAAL ’s Secretary General Alfonso Fraga, recalled the visit by Cuban Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro to liberated areas in southern Vietnam in 1973, where he raised the liberation front’s flag to express the Cuban people’s solidarity with Vietnam ’s struggle against the US .

He confirmed that the victory on April 30 contributed considerably to the fight against imperialism by oppressed peoples throughout the world.

To mark the occasion, Ambassador Cong presented OSPAAAL with a book of political articles penned by President Ho Chi Minh and written in Spanish.

The participants also enjoyed a film about Ho Chi Minh entitled: Portrait of a Celebrity./.
