The East Meets West (EMW) non-governmental organisation launched a dental care project in the central city of Da Nang on June 9, which will be activated in the central region before expanding to the north.

Between 2014 and 2015, the EMW will provide training courses for 250 medical workers in Da Nang and the central provinces of Quang Tri, Quang Binh and Quang Nam, as well as the northern provinces of Phu Tho and Hai Duong.

The 399,500 USD project will also provide 250 schools in the target localities with essential equipment for proper dental hygiene and tooth decay prevention.

Since 1996, the EMW has given free dental check-ups for over 140,000 children from disadvantaged backgrounds.

The latest statistics show that more than 90 percent of the national population has dental problems.

As much as 85 percent of children aged between 6 and 8 years old suffer from baby-teeth decay, mainly due to an increase in sugar consumption, insufficient fluoride substances in food, and a lack of knowledge about brushing teeth properly.-VNA
