Drought forecast for central, south-central coastal provinces in 2019

There is a high risk of drought in the central and south-central coastal provinces as the dry season is forecast to extend to August and even September of 2019, according to Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Khanh Hoa (VNA) – There is a high risk of drought in the central and south-centralcoastal provinces as the dry season is forecast to extend to August and evenSeptember of 2019, according to Hoang Phuc Lam, Deputy Director of the NationalCentre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting (NCHMF).

Speaking at a conference onnatural disaster control work for the central and Central Highlands region inKhanh Hoa province on July 5, the official also said the storm season wouldcome later than normal this year, with fewer storms and tropical low pressuresystems to hit the country this year.

However, he urged caution againstexceptionally strong storms with complicated developments.

Theconference looked back at the work in forecasting, warning and coping withnatural disasters in the recent past, and drew out lessons for localities inthe region to improve their performance in the field.

Representativesfrom Khanh Hoa, Thua Thien-Hue and Binh Dinh provinces and Da Nang city sharedtheir localities’ experience in responding to flash floods, landslides andurban flooding in 2018.

Concludingthe conference, Vice Chairman of the Central Steering Committee for NaturalDisaster Prevention and Control Tran Quang Hoai outlines 11 key tasks foragencies and authorities in the region in responding to natural disastersduring the remaining time of the year.

One of thetasks is to accelerate the pace of projects to deal with coastal erosion andriver mouth sedimentation as the storm and rainy season is approaching. -VNA

Storm brings heavy rains to northern Vietnam

Storm Narra, the fourth to hit the East Sea this year, brought strong winds and heavy rains to northern Vietnam on early August 22, with some areas forecast to receive more than 500mm of rain as the storm moves slowly over the northern waters of the East Sea.
