Education Minister in Singapore to discuss bilateral cooperation

Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan on April 14 met his Singaporean counterpart Heng Swee Keat to discuss the operations of the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO), as well as ways to foster bilateral cooperation in education.

Luan, who is President of the SEAMEO Council for the 2013-2015 tenure,is visiting Singapore from April 13-15 for the first time since hetook office as education minister.

During themeeting, the two ministers talked of a number of SEAMEO’s multilateraloperations, such as a post-2015 education agenda for Southeast Asia,activities in 2014 and 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of theorganisation and the group’s affiliation with other education groups inother regions.

Minister Luan highly valued the support of theSingaporean Government and its Ministry for Education in facilitatingthe operational efficiency of the SEAMEO Regional Language Centre(SEAMEO REL) in Singapore, contributing to training English teachersfor SEAMEO member countries, including Vietnam.

Within the framework of the education agreement between the Vietnameseand Singaporean Ministries of Education signed on April 25, 2007, theSingaporean side has assisted Vietnam in upgrading English teachingmethods for high school teachers at the SEAMEO RELC.

By the end of 2011, as many as 10 training course has been organised for 300 Vietnamese teachers.

The Minister proposed that Singapore continue helping train Englishteachers for Vietnam, and holding more conferences to share thecountry’s experience with Vietnamese experts and lecturers in the fieldsof biotechnology, logistics, e-commerce and university and collegemanagement.

Vietnam is keen on learningSingapore’s experience in applying information technology in teaching,he said, adding that more joint activities and student exchangeprogrammes should be conducted.

Minister Luan alsoaffirmed that Vietnam is eager to study the education model ofSingapore, as it is working towards comprehensive education reform.

Heng Swee Keat said he believes that theVietnam-Singapore close education partnership will continue playing animportant role in the development of bilateral ties between the twocountries.

The same day, the Vietnamese Ministeralso visited the Crescent Girls’ School, one of the 13 excellent-ratedschools in Singapore .

SEAMEO, atrans-governmental organisation in Southeast Asia , was established in1965. Its members consist of Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos,Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, TimorLeste and Vietnam.-VNA

SEAMEO has 20 regionalcentres and a network to conduct its research and training programmes indifferent areas including education, science and culture.

Vietnam, US strengthen higher education cooperation

Deputy Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Van Phuc highlighted the growing educational partnership between the two nations, with 30,000 out of 200,000 Vietnamese citizens studying abroad being in the US. In the 2022-2023 academic year, Vietnamese students ranked fifth globally in terms of numbers of international students in the US, rising by 5.7%.

Vietnam delivers 3 tonnes of aid supplies to Myanmar earthquake victims

The aid package includes antibiotics, digestive medications, cold and flu remedies, and basic healthcare equipment like blood pressure monitors, blood glucose metres, bandages, and disinfectants. The supplies also feature mosquito spray pumps and insecticides to prevent disease outbreaks in affected areas.

Can Tho plans to eliminate run-down houses before reunification anniversary
