Efforts exerted to preserve hundreds-year-old craft

Local authorities and people of Kieu Ky village in Gia Lam district, Hanoi have been exerting efforts to preserve the traditional craft of producing ultra thin gold leaves for gilding ancient statues.

In the past, to produce such super-thin gold leaves to overlay ancient statues and decorative products, Kieu Ky’s artisans had to go through dozens of steps, requiring great effort and patience.

Today, many households use advanced technology in producing silver and tin leaves along with the traditional gold leaves crafting. The production renovation has improved craftsmen’s livelihoods.

They have also focused on developing gilding craft and introduced the products widely instead of only providing gold leaves for fine arts craft villages like Son Dong or Ha Thai.

To promote the traditional craft of gold laminating to youngsters, the local government, along with KieuKy Gold Laminating Cooperative and passionate artisans, has opened annual vocational training classes for young craftsmen.

Thanks to local efforts, Kieu Ky village’s gold laminating craft has thrived, helping improve local people’s living standards.-VNA
