National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong received a European Parliament (EP) delegation for relations with Southeast Asian and ASEAN countries led by Wermer Langen, in Hanoi on March 15.

The NA Vice Chairwoman spoke highly of the contributions of EP members to cooperative relations for the sake of peace, stability and mutual understanding in the world.

Phong said that the Vietnamese NA and the EP still see a lot of potential for cooperation and Vietnam needs the EP’s assistance in law-making and addressing issues relating to commercial disputes.

She suggested the EP and its member parliaments strengthen the exchange of delegations with Vietnam , thus boosting the sharing of information and experiences as well as helping Vietnam improve its NA deputies’ capacity.

While affirming Vietnam always respects, protects and cares for the legitimate rights and interests of the people, the NA Vice Chairwoman also expressed her wish that EP parliamentarians would pay more attention to studying Vietnam ’s situation in order to support the country’s development decisions.

For his part, Wermer Langen expressed his belief that the relationship between the EP and the Vietnamese NA will flourish in the future and said the EP is ready to cooperate with the Vietnamese NA.

The EP parliamentarians said that together with economic cooperation, the two sides should strengthen ties in other fields such as culture and education.

On the same day, the EP parliamentarians held talks with a Vietnamese NA delegation led by Chairman of the Committee for External Affairs Nguyen Van Son, during which the two sides expressed the wish to further their multi-faceted cooperation.

The Vietnamese side affirmed its consistent policy of attaching importance to an equal partnership and to long-term, comprehensive cooperation with the EU for peace and development in the region and the world at large.

In addition to boosting bilateral relations, the EP parliamentarians said they hoped that Vietnam , as the Chair of ASEAN and AIPA in 2010, would make active contributions to fostering the relationship between the EU and ASEAN.
