Gender equality enables female political involvement

Vice Chairwoman of the National Assembly Tong Thi Phong made theremark at a workshop held in the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu onDecember 14.

She highlighted gender equality as a fundamental human right and an important measure of social progress.

Vietnam has worked hard to build a legal framework andimplement national strategies in the field. Chapter II of theConstitution stipulates the human rights, including the gender equalityof both male and female citizens.

By approving theLaw on Gender Equality in 2006, the Vietnamese legislature has shown itsstrong commitment to promoting gender equality, the lawmaker said.

Recognising gender equality as an important contribution to thesocio-economic development of each country, participants proposed arange of measures to increase the involvement of women in politicalissues.

By 2020, Vietnam aims for women to fillat least 25 percent of posts in party committees at all levels and 35-40percent of seats in the National Assembly. The State and Governmentsagencies mean to have females occupy at least 30 percent of keyleadership positions.-VNA
