Hanoi (VNA) – The Government of Germany has supported the implementation of two joint projects between Cambodia and Laos and between Cambodia and Thailand, on natural resources management in the Mekong River Basin.

According to the Mekong River Commission (MRC), the projects aim to better manage natural resources and address flood and drought issues in the Mekong River basin. They are two out of five projects built basing on the Basin Development Strategy.

The projects’ first phase will be carried out from April 2018 – March 2019. Through the projects, the member countries will promote their trans-boundary cooperation in planning and managing shared water resources for their mutual benefit.

Besides, the projects also focus on joint assessment and planning for flood and drought management in border areas of Cambodia and Thailand.

The MRC said the projects are hoped to attract funding support, contributing to ensuring water security and promoting socio-economic development in Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.

The MRC is the intergovernmental body responsible for cooperation on the sustainable management of the Mekong River Basin whose members include Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. It serves as a regional platform for water diplomacy as well as a knowledge hub of water resources management for the sustainable development of the region.-VNA
