Hanoi, Berlin step up ties

A Hanoi official has expressed his hope that his city and the German capital city Berlin will reach agreements in economic cooperation in the coming time.

Meeting with visiting Mayor of Berlin KlausWowereit in Hanoi on October 28, Chairman of the Hanoi People’sCommittee Nguyen The Thao called on the two sides to join hands inhandling traffic-related issues and cooperate with each other in humanresources development, administrative reform and public education.

Hanoi will dispatch experts to Berlin to learn from the city’sexperience in hydrology in order to revive the polluted To Lich River,he said.

The official voiced his hope that Klaus Wowereit’svisit will help further the cooperative relationship between Vietnam andGermany as well as between the two capital cities in particular.

As the country’s centre of politics, economics, culture, educationand training, Hanoi has recorded changes across all areas over the pastyears, especially in the field of economics, he said.

However, the city has met a range of difficulties in investment andinfrastructure development due to a large number of immigrants fromother provinces, he added.

As a result, traffic jams,environmental pollution, overcrowded schools and hospitals, plus issuesregarding social security and order have made the city headachy.

For his part, Klaus Wowereit said his first-ever visit to Vietnamaims to discuss ways for bilateral cooperation and traditional tiesbetween the two countries.

He described cultural and economic fields as central realms that contribute to boosting bilateral ties.

The Mayor pledged that Berlin will send its experts to Hanoi to helpthe city with solid waste treatment and traffic and urban planningissues, and stands ready to sign cooperative agreements with the city inthese fields.-VNA
